State of Firsts

Cinema Art Theater | Lewes, Delaware
The Cinema Art Theater welcomes State of Firsts, a compelling documentary that follows Sarah McBride during her historic first year in Congress as the first openly transgender person elected to the U.S. Congress.
The film explores themes of leadership, representation, public service, and what it means to serve with empathy during a deeply polarized moment in American politics. As McBride faces public scrutiny, political opposition, and personal attacks, State of Firsts offers an intimate look at resilience, perseverance, and the challenges of breaking barriers in public service.
Directed by Chase Joynt, the documentary highlights McBride's commitment to policy work and her determination to remain focused on serving her constituents while navigating national attention and historic expectations.
State of Firsts returns to the Cinema Art Theater after a sold-out screening during the 2025 Rehoboth Beach International Film Festival.
Critic Frank J. Avella of Edge Media Network called the film, "an essential moment of LGBTQ+ history," praising McBride's grace, perseverance, and leadership.
