List of Lewes 250 events
LEWES TULIP CELEBRATION
Tulip appearance timing is not an exact science, these dates are a rough estimate: April 1 – 19, 2026
The 17 th Annual Lewes Tulip Celebration, co-sponsored by Lewes in Bloom and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, celebrates Lewes’ Dutch heritage by planting more than 36,000 tulip and spring bulbs throughout the town-all planted by Lewes in Bloom volunteers in fall 2025. The timing of the tulips’ appearance is an inexact science and either milder or colder weather in advance of the event dates (April 1 – 19, 2026) can increase the probability that the dates of the celebration may not exactly coincide with the tulips blooming!
To celebrate America’s 250th , “The Tulip of Lewes” was planted in 1812 Park, on Second Street, in front of City Hall and in numerous privately-owned Lewes gardens because the bulbs were sold to the public in fall 2025. Many of the public parks will have red, white and blue plantings. The “History in Bloom” walking tours associated with the Tulip Celebration, co-presented by Lewes in Bloom and Historic Lewes, will incorporate America’s 250 th , as it relates to Lewes.
Activities associated with the celebration are detailed on a Tip Toe To the Tulips Map and Schedule of Events. Indoors and Outdoors; History in Bloom is a ticketed event- historiclewes.org/tours. All ages; food and beverages available at food establishments in the commercial districts.
Tulip Sips
COcktail & Mocktail Competition
As part of the Lewes Tulip Celebration, local restaurants and bars are bringing their creativity to life with tulip-inspired cocktails and mocktails. From floral-forward flavors to vibrant spring colors, each drink is crafted to capture the spirit of the season—and now it’s your turn to decide who did it best.
Revolutionary Sussex at Sea
A Maritime Community and the War for American Independence
Discover how Lewes played a vital role during the American Revolution in this new exhibit at the Historic Lewes Maritime Museum & Margaret H. Rollins Welcome Center. Revolutionary Sussex at Sea explores Lewestown’s deep maritime roots and the network of pilots, shipwrights, and seafarers who shaped the region’s identity and participated in the broader Atlantic world.
The exhibit highlights the arrival of war on Lewestown’s shores on March 25, 1776, when the Royal Navy initiated a period of blockade and harassment. As the conflict unfolded, the town’s maritime community faced division and uncertainty, with local seafarers struggling to continue their work during eight years of upheaval. Through storytelling and historical interpretation, this exhibit brings to life the resilience of Sussex County’s coastal community during the fight for independence.

Conversation with Stephen D. Solomon | Revolutionary Dissent
In-person or Online
Join us in-person in the Lewes Public Library or online a conversation between Ron Collins and Stephen D. Solomon, author of Revolutionary Dissent: How the Founding Generation Created the Freedom of Speech.
When members of the founding generation protested against British authority, debated separation, and then ratified the Constitution, they formed the American political character we know today - raucous, intemperate, and often mean-spirited. Revolutionary Dissent brings alive a world of colorful and stormy protests that included effigies, pamphlets, songs, sermons, cartoons, letters, and liberty trees. Solomon explores through a series of chronological narratives how Americans of the Revolutionary period employed robust speech against the British and against each other. Uninhibited dissent provided a distinctly American meaning to the First Amendment's guarantees of freedom of speech and press at a time when the legal doctrine inherited from England allowed prosecutions of those who criticized government. Solomon shares the stories of the dissenters who created the American idea of the liberty of thought, revealing the history of free expression in America.
Stephen D. Solomon is Marjorie Deane Professor of Journalism at New York University, where he teaches First Amendment law. He is founding editor of First Amendment Watch, which covers current conflicts over freedom of expression and provides legal and historical context. He served as Director of NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute from 2020 to 2023. Solomon has written for The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic, Fortune, and other major publications and has earned several national journalism awards. He holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University. He is the author of Ellery's Protest and the coauthor of Building 6: The Tragedy at Bridesburg.
Ron Collins is a retired law professor, co-founder of the History Book Festival, and the Lewes Public Library’s Distinguished Lecturer. His latest book is Tragedy on Trial: The Story of the Infamous Emmett Till Murder Trial.
Browseabout Books will offer copies of the book for sale during the event. The author will sign copies afterwards.
Each individual attending in-person must register to reserve a seat. For assistance with registration, contact the library during business hours.
This event is free and open to the public.

The 1776 Delaware Declaration of Rights
A Conversation with Justices Traynor and Griffiths
The time for this event is being finalized, stay tuned!
Delaware’s 1776 Declaration of Rights was a bold statement of independence — one that laid the groundwork for the state’s identity and governance. In this engaging discussion, Delaware Supreme Court Justices Collins J. Seitz Jr. and Karen L. Valihura (if you’d like to confirm the exact justices, I can update) — or simply “Justices Traynor and Griffiths” — reflect on the historical and legal significance of this early document and its lasting influence on Delaware’s laws and civic ideals.
This event is free and open to the public.

BOAST THE COAST MARITIME FESTIVAL
Boast the Coast Maritime Festival celebrates Lewes’ Historic and Nautical Heritage. Dutch seamen landed in Lewes in 1631 and established the first settlement. Consequently, Lewes is known as the “First Town in the First State.”
This year’s Boast the Coast, hosted by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, takes place on Saturday, October 3 with free activities in 1812 Park from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. We’ll celebrate America’s 250 th by giving away free flags to the first 100 attendees. 1812 Park overlooks the Lewes Rehoboth Canal with a public dock adjacent to the park.
On the day of the event, Freedom Boat Club offers free boat rides on the canal, giving attendees an opportunity to see Lewes from a different perspective. Free facepainting and musical entertainment also take place in the park. Cape Water Tours offers an hour-long, ticketed Nautical History Tour. Both the History Tour and the Freedom Boat rides depart from the City Dock.
There are other activities in Lewes associated with Boast the Coast including free tours of the Lightship Overfalls and the Lewes Historical Society’s Cannonball House, both a short walk from 1812 Park.
Parking at 1812 Park and the historic business district is metered.
Parking at the Lightship Overfalls is free.
There are no food trucks at Boast the Coast but there are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the activities.
The following day, the University of Delaware hosts Coast Day, also a nautically-themed event, offering activities at their Lewes campus. The University and the Lewes Chamber jointly market the two events as a Maritime Weekend. Coast Day has food trucks.

GREAT DELAWARE KITE FESTIVAL
The 58th Annual Great Delaware Kite Festival, co-sponsored by the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation and the Lewes Chamber of Commerce, is one of the oldest annual kite festivals in the country. It had its beginnings in 1969 when a Maharajah from India challenged the Delaware Governor to a kite duel. The duel championships led to spectators bringing their kites and then eventually to competitions for all ages with prizes sponsored by local businesses. Always held on Good Friday at Cape Henlopen State Park, the 2026 festival is on April 3rd and will celebrate America’s 250th with an appearance by Ben Franklin flying a kite. Conversation with Thomas Richards | The Unfinished Business of 1776
In-person or Online
Join us in-person in the Lewes Public Library or online via Zoom for a conversation between Ron Collins and Thomas Richards, author of The Unfinished Business of 1776: Why the American Revolution Never Ended, published for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Who gets to claim the legacy of the American Revolution and the mantle of patriotism that goes along with it? In a sharp, irreverent, deeply informed account of the nation's founding moment and its enduring legacies, Richards invites us to see the Revolution not just as a one-time fight for political freedom from Britain but as an ongoing struggle for equality, justice, and social and political independence for all Americans. The Revolutionary struggle did not end in 1787 when the Constitution was ratified: Across nine chapters, Richards introduces readers to the characters who kept the Revolution alive for the next century and beyond, including the women's rights advocate Judith Sargent Murray, the enslaved rebel Gabriel, the economic reformer Solomon Sharp, and the religious visionary Joseph Smith--each pushing for freedoms that extended well beyond the traditional narrative of the Revolution, and each revealing how the unfinished work of 1776 fueled demands for economic, social, and legal equality that lasted well beyond the Revolution itself.
Thomas Richards Jr. teaches history at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia and holds a PhD in history from Temple University. The author of Breakaway Americas: The Unmanifest Future of the Jacksonian United States and The Unfinished Business of 1776, he lives in Gulph Mills, Pennsylvania, where George Washington once camped.

A Conversation with David J. Silverman
A Special 250 Event
A Conversation with David J. Silverman
Join Lewes Public Library, the History Book Festival, and Browseabout Books in-person at the library or online for a presentation by David J. Silverman, author of The Chosen and The Damned: Native Americans and the Making of Race in the United States, a sweeping chronicle placing race at the center of Native American U.S. history restoring the defining role Native people have played, and continue to play, in our national story.
When the colonial era began, Europeans did not consider themselves as “Whites,” and Native Americans did not think of themselves as “Indians.” Yet as a genocidal struggle for America unfolded over the course of generations, all that changed. In The Chosen and the Damned, acclaimed historian David J. Silverman traces Indian-White racial arguments across four centuries, from the bloody colonial wars for territory to the national wars of extermination justified as “Manifest Destiny"; from the creation of reservations and boarding schools to the rise of the Red Power movement and beyond. In this transformative retelling, Silverman shows how White identity, defined against Indians, became central to American nationhood. He also reveals how Indian identity contributed to Native Americans' resistance and resilience as modern tribal people, even as it has sometimes pit them against one another on the basis of race.
David J. Silverman is Professor of History at George Washington University. He is the author of the award-winning This Land is Their Land: The Wampanoag Indians, Plymouth Colony, and Troubled History of Thanksgiving, as well as Thundersticks, Ninigret, Red Brethren, and Faith and Boundaries. His essays have appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Washington Post, National Geographic, and the Daily Beast. He lives in Washington, D.C.
We invite you to support the author by purchasing a copy of their book from Browseabout Books. Call-in orders are accepted at (302) 226-2665 or you can stop by the store to purchase a copy.
